Open Diophantine Problems

چکیده

Diophantine Analysis is a very active domain of mathematical research where one finds more conjectures than results. We collect here a number of open questions concerning Diophantine equations (including Pillai’s Conjectures), Diophantine approximation (featuring the abc Conjecture) and transcendental number theory (with, for instance, Schanuel’s Conjecture). Some questions related to Mahler’s measure and Weil absolute logarithmic height are then considered (e.g., Lehmer’s Problem). We also discuss Mazur’s question regarding the density of rational points on a variety, especially in the particular case of algebraic groups, in connexion with transcendence problems in several variables. We say only a few words on metric problems, equidistribution questions, Diophantine approximation on manifolds and Diophantine analysis on function fields. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: Primary: 11Jxx Secondary: 11Dxx, 11Gxx, 14Gxx

Smooth Parametrizations in Dynamics, Analysis, Diophantine and Computational Geometry

Smooth parametrization consists in a subdivision of the mathematical objects under consideration into simple pieces, and then parametric representation of each piece, while keeping control of high order derivatives. The main goal of the present paper is to provide a short overview of some results and open problems on smooth parametrization and its applications in several apparently rather separ...

On a Few Diophantine Equations, in Particular, Fermat’s Last Theorem

This is a survey on Diophantine equations, with the purpose being to give the flavour of some known results on the subject and to describe a few open problems. We will come across Fermat’s last theorem and its proof by Andrew Wiles using the modularity of elliptic curves, and we will exhibit other Diophantine equations which were solved à la Wiles. We will exhibit many families of Thue equation...

Rational points near manifolds and metric Diophantine approximation

This work is motivated by problems on simultaneous Diophantine approximation on manifolds, namely, establishing Khintchine and Jarńık type theorems for submanifolds of Rn. These problems have attracted a lot of interest since Kleinbock and Margulis proved a related conjecture of Alan Baker and V.G. Sprindžuk. They have been settled for planar curves but remain open in higher dimensions. In this...

Old and New Conjectured Diophantine Inequalities

The original meaning of diophantine problems is to find all solutions of equations in integers or rational numbers, and to give a bound for these solutions. One may expand the domain of coefficients and solutions to include algebraic integers, algebraic numbers, polynomials, rational functions, or algebraic functions. In the case of polynomial solutions, one tries to bound their degrees. Inequa...

Diophantine quadruples and Fibonacci numbers

A Diophantine m-tuple is a set of m positive integers with the property that product of any two of its distinct elements is one less then a square. In this survey we describe some problems and results concerning Diophantine m-tuples and their connections with Fibonacci numbers.
